Education & Honors
Patricia Freres is a Luxembourgish soprano, born in Esch/Alzette. She received her first artistic training at the Académie de Danse Germaine Damar; she then studied at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, among others with Louis Landuyt and Ionel Pantea. Her diplomas and distinctions include the “Prix des Jeunesses Musicales” as Lauréate de la Classe d’Art Lyrique (2000), the “Prix Supérieur Art Lyrique” cum laude (2001), the “Prix Supérieur Chant” cum laude (2003), as well as her appointment as Chevalier de l’Ordre de Mérite du Luxembourg in 2014.
Masterclasses & Artistic Development
Patricia Freres received important artistic impulses in masterclasses with:
- Sylvia Geszty (Luxembourg)
- Helena Lazarska (International Summer Academy, Salzburg)
- Klesie Kelly (Luxembourg)
- Norman Shetler (Lied, Hamburg)
- Cheryl Studer (Lichtenberg, Bayreuth)
Her vocal studies also led her to Ingrid Figur in Berlin. From 2013 to 2016, she worked with the bass Daniel Lewis Williams.
Since then, Patricia Freres has developed a broad vocal and stylistic range, extending from classical-romantic opera and Lied to contemporary experimental music theatre, supported by a strong sense of scenic interpretation. This includes, among others, staged Lied programmes such as Robert Schumann’s Frauenliebe und Leben, as well as a musical-theatrical approach to the Gretchen tragedy with music by Wolf, Gounod, Schumann and Ritter.
Roles & Engagements
Patricia Freres has appeared in numerous leading roles. Her repertoire includes, among others, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Gretel and later the Mother in Hansel and Gretel, Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, Manon in Manon, Jeanne d’Arc, Micaëla in Carmen, and Mimì in La Bohème. She has also performed Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 at the Luxembourg Philharmonie. Alongside her music-theatre projects, she maintains an active concert career and regularly appears in recital and concert programmes.
